The School of Mathematics and Statistics of Xidian University, established in July 2013, traces its origins to the Basic Courses Teaching Department founded during the university's early years. Over decades of development, it has evolved through several key phases: the Mathematics Teaching and Research Section, the Department of Applied Mathematics, and the Mathematics Department within the School of Sciences.
Currently, the School is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in Mathematics (first-level discipline) and Applied Mathematics, and master’s degrees in Statistics (first-level discipline). In addition, the School offers postdoctoral research opportunities through its Mathematics Postdoctoral Research Station.
The School offers undergraduate programs in the three majors: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (National First-Class Major; Provincial Prestigious and Characteristic Major), Information and Computing Science (National First-Class Major), and Statistics (Provincial First-Class Major). Moreover, special innovation programs are available for top students.
The school comprises 4 departments, 1 research center, and 1 research institute, supported by 122 full-time faculty members including 24 professors (20 doctoral supervisors) and 58 associate professors. There is a distinguished cohort of scholars: 2 National Talent Program Professors, 1 National Distinguished Teacher, 2 National Youth Talent Scholars, 7 Provincial/Ministerial Talent Awardees, 1 Expert Member of the National Textbook Commission, 1 Member of the Ministry of Education’s National Advisory Committee, 2 Recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, 1 Provincial Morality Model Teacher, 1 Provincial Exemplary Teacher of Teaching, 1 Provincial Youth Talent, 5 candidates of Youth Talent Promotion Program, and 2 young outstanding talents of Shaanxi Colleges and Universities.
The school strives for high-quality teaching, first-class discipline construction, cutting-edge scientific research, and high-level talents cultivation. Aiming to build a distinctive world-class discipline, the School attaches equal importance to teaching and scientific research with emphasis on interdisciplinary research and focuses on strengthening internationalization and informatization. Great progress has been made in many aspects. Over the past five years, it has completed over 206 scientific projects with research funding of over 37 million yuan. Many high-quality papers have been published, including 230 in the CAS Q2 journals or above. The faculty members have won numerous awards, including 4 first prizes and 2 second prizes of Shaanxi Science & Technology Award, 1 second prize of Xi’an Science & Technology Award, 4 Shaanxi Youth Science & Technology Awards, and several awards from provincial and ministerial associations. The School has offered PhD degrees to 200 candidates and 8 earned Provincial Excellent Doctoral Dissertations. The School has been recognized by “China’s Best Discipline Ranking” for years.
The school now has 1 National Teaching Team, 1 National Virtual Teaching and Research Office, 2 National First-Class Undergraduate Courses, 7 Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Courses, 2 National Excellent MOOCs and 4 Provincial Excellent MOOCs. Two National Planned Textbooks have been published. The School has successively won 3 National Teaching Achievement Awards and more than 10 Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards.
The students have earned 1,600+ international and national awards in mathematical modeling competitions, including 8 Outstanding Winners in MCM/ICM (Mathematical Contest in Modeling/Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling), 104 Finalist Nominations, 1 MATLAB Innovation Award, and 1 Special Prize in the National Postgraduate Mathematical Modeling Competition. These achievements mark the School as one of China’s top performers in STEM competitions.
Over the past five years, the School has published approximately 700 papers indexed by the Science Citation Index (SCI), with a significant number appearing in top peer-reviewed journals, including Advances in Mathematics, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, Inverse Problems, Journal de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées, SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, SIAM Journal on Financial Mathematics, SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, and Transactions of the American Mathematical Society.
