The School of Computer Science and Technology (SCST) of Xidian University was founded in 1995, and is one of the earliest-established centers of computer science in China. After 60 years’ hard work, SCST has made significant achievements in talents cultivation, scientific research, faculty development, and disciplinary development and a sound talents training system has been established. The SCST offers a postdoctoral research program in Computer Science and Technology. It has two national first-level doctoral degree programs, Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering, and a national second-level master degree program, Education Technology. Computer Science and Technology ranked among the world’s top 1% according to the ESI ranking. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities,2014 issued by Shanghai Jiaotong University, for the first time, Computer Science and Technology ranked the 8th in China and among the top 100 in the world. Computer Architecture, Computer Applications Technology, and Computer Software andTheory are key disciplines at the provincial level.
SCST has 122 full-time faculty members, of whom 24 are professors, 60 are associate professors, and 21 are doctoral supervisors. Among the teaching staff, there is one specially appointed professor of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program, one talent supported by the National New Century Hundreds of Thousands of Talents Program, one National Outstanding Youth Fund recipient, one chief scientist of 863 Project in Planned Information, three members of the Teaching Guidance Committee of the Ministry of Education, and one nationally certificated expert of Engineering Education. The school is well structured with elites and talents of all ages.
SCST consists of the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Computer Engineering, the Department of Network Engineering, and the Experimental Centers for Computer Science Majors. It has four undergraduate majors, Computer Science and Technology, Network Engineering, Education Technology, and Engineering of Internet of Things. The major of Computer Science and Technology is a brand-name major of Shaanxi province, and a first-category featured major for development by the Ministry of Education. It was nationally certificated in 2007 as a major of engineering education and certificated again in 2013.The major of Network Engineering is a second-category major for development by the Ministry of Education and is one of the nation’s first experimental majors of Excellence Engineer Training Program. The SCST has a provincial-level teaching team in Computer Science and Technology and two provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers of Computer Network and Engineering of Internet of Things, and Computer Experiment Teaching. It has four national-level first-class courses and 10 provincial-level first-class courses.Over the past five years, it has had 42 books published, many of which have been selected as the textbooks for Chinese universities. It has undertaken many research projects on teaching reforms, achieving one national-level second prize in teaching and two provincial-level special prize in teaching, three provincial-level first prize in teaching achievements, two provincial-level second prize in teaching, and 29 other awards in teaching .
SCST has four provincial-level key laboratories and engineering centers, Shaanxi Network and System Security Key Lab, Shaanxi Internet of Things Experimental Research Center, Computer Imaging Key Lab of the Ministry of Information Industry, and Computer Input and Output Technology Key Lab of the Ministry of Information Industry. It has an innovation team recognized by the Ministry of Education, and five research institutes/centers, the Computer Peripheral Device Institute, the Multimedia Technique Institute, the Network and ComputingInstitute, the Computing Theory and Technology Institute, and the Computer Information Application Research Center. The School has established research areas and sufficient research funding. The research is oriented towards leading-edge technologies and the nation’s major needs.
Training high-level talents is the goal of SCST and academic research is its foundation.By means of technical innovation and constant efforts, it has been well established in the areas of computer network and information security, software theories and applications, high performance computing, computing intelligence theories and applications, computing biological information science, and peripheral devices and system. Over the past five years, it has undertaken suchnational and provincial key projects as the national 973 Project, 863 Project, key projects of National Natural Science Foundation, Key International Cooperative Projects, National Special Program for Science and Technology, and Technology Supporting Programs, and the research funds are on the rise. It has hadhigh-quality academic papers published in the mainstream international periodicals and conferences. Eight monographs have been published in English and thirteen in Chinese. More than 100 patents have been granted. Its research has been awarded a second prize of national technical invention and more than 30 provincial level prizes
The SCST has more than 3500 students, with 1200 being postgraduates. It has broad international collaboration and relationship with universities and institutionsin such countries and areas as America, Japan, England, Singapore, South Korea, and Hong Kong. The school has attached importance not only to theoretical education but also to the development of students’ practical skills and creativity. It has established cooperation with well-known international andnational enterprises to increase students’ practical capabilities. In recent years, students have had excellent performance in such contests as the National Electronic Design Contest, Microsoft Embedded System Contest, College Student Mathematical Modeling Contest, ACM International College Student Program Design Contest, and College Student Challenge Cup. Up to 20 students have won international awards and 56 national awards, and 48 provincial-level prizes have been awarded.
