Established in 2013, the School of Aerospace Science and Technology (SAST) is a research-intensive institution founded to advance China’s aerospace ambitions. We focus on aerospace science, develop cutting-edge space and aerospace electronic information technologies, cultivate specialized talent, and support national space strategy.
The school comprises three departments: the Telemetry, Tracking and Command Department, the Navigation and Control Department, and the Intelligent Detection Department, along with one Space Science and Technology Experiment Center. It also operates four research institutes: the Aircraft Telemetry, Tracking and Communication Research Institute; the Navigation, Detection and Guidance Research Institute; the Intelligent Control and Image Engineering Research Institute; and the Mechanical Systems and Advanced Control Research Institute.
The school conducts research on fundamental aerospace theories and critical technologies spanning space telemetry/tracking/communication, navigation/guidance, and space exploration. It has successively led the approval of the university’s first National Key Basic Research and Development Program (973 Program), the university’s first National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Major Research Instrument Development Project, and the university’s first NSFC Major Research Plan. Additionally, it undertakes multiple national major projects.
The school currently has over 120 faculty and staff members, including 23 professors and 45 associate professors. 40 percent of faculty possess overseas experience. 94 percent have doctoral degrees.
It offers two undergraduate programs: Aerospace Science and Technology, and Detection, Guidance and Control Technology. It also hosts the Qian Xuesen Aerospace Science Experimental Class, the only electronics-focused space science program among Chinese universities.
At the graduate level, it confers academic master’s degrees in Instrument Science and Technology and Control Science and Engineering; professional master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information; doctoral degrees in Instrument Science and Technology and Control Science and Engineering; and hosts a postdoctoral research station in Instrument Science and Technology. Current enrollment includes over 400 undergraduates, 300 master’s students, and 100 doctoral candidates.
Upholding the educational philosophy of "consolidating theoretical foundations, enhancing practical capabilities, leading scientific development, and prioritizing innovative exploration," the school emphasizes open collaboration. It is committed to cultivating electronic information talents with aerospace characteristics and building a distinctive world-class institution.
