School of Aerospace Science and Technology

The School of Aerospace Science and Technology(SAST) was founded on July 14, 2013. To meet the needs of national space development, it is a major initiative of Xidian University to support the development of the superior disciplines of aerospace electronic information. Bao Weimin, the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of Science and Technology Commission of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, is specially appointed as the dean of the school. SAST focuses on the frontier research in the field of aerospace science. Supported by the discipline construction, the fundamental goal of SAST is to cultivate the innovative people urgently needed in the development of the state astronautic technology. It serves national development demand with the research results and first-class talents, and closely combines the fundamentality, innovativeness and engineering quality.

SAST has three departments and one experiment center, namely, the Department of Measurement, Control and Communication, the Department of Navigation and Control, the Department of Intelligent Detection and the Space Science and Technology Experiment Center. It also has four research institutes, namely, the the Institute of Measurement, Control and Communication of Space Vehicle, the Institute of Navigation, Detection and Guidance, the Institute of Intelligent Control and Image Engineering and the Institute of Mechanical System and Advanced Control.

The school has two academic master enrollment disciplines: Instrument Science and Technology, and Control Science and Engineering. It also has two professional master enrollment fields: Space Vehicle Measurement, Control and Guidance, and Space Vehicle System Engineering. The school admits Ph.D. students majored in Instrument Science and Technology, and Control Science and Engineering. The school has three undergraduate specialties named the Technologies of Detection, Guidance and Control, Space Science and Technology, and Aircraft Design and Engineering. Qian Xuesen Space Science Experimental Class is managed by the school.

SAST currently has more than 90 full-time faculties, including 2 dual-employed academicians, 17 professors, 38 associate professors, and 2 National Teaching Advisory Committee members. It also has one faculty elected in the New Century Excellent Talents of Ministry of Education of China, one Shaanxi provincial outstanding teaching fellow, one science and technology innovation team of Shaanxi, one awarded Xian Youth Science and Technology Talent, and three university-level outstanding teachers. Of the faculties, three are 31 Ph.D. supervisors and 64 Master supervisors. The school now has more than 400 undergraduates, more than 300 master degree candidates and more than 100 Ph.D. candidates. SAST has one national excellent course, one national "first-class major", two provincial characteristic majors, two provincial excellent courses and one university-level excellent course.

SAST conducts forward-looking, fundamental, strategic and innovative scientific research aimed at the major national needs such as adjacent space development, deep space exploration, manned spaceflight and Beidou navigation. Remarkable and domestically leading achievements have been made in plasma sheath measurement, control and communication of high-speed aircraft in near space, advanced navigation guidance and control of space vehicles, space exploration and intelligent information processing, and missile-borne integrated electronic system and reliability. SAST undertakes 7 national major projects with the fund being over ten million yuan, and has been approved as the first at the university to undertake 973 Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The school is also the first to have the major Scientific Instrument Development project of the NSFC, and the first to carry out the major research plan of the NSFC. SAST has attracted an accumulation fund of more than 250 million yuan, published 381 SCI papers and has been granted 196 invention patents. Besides, it has earned 2 provincial and ministerial scientific research achievements awards.

SAST focuses on both theory and practice, and builds a space science and technology experiment center. It has become an incubator for high-level scientific research achievements and a training base for top-notch innovative talents. SAST pays attention to the cooperation with institutions. In order to cultivate innovative talents, SAST co-built the Qian Xuesen Space Science Talent Training Base with Qian Xuesen Space Technology Laboratory, the Joint Research Center of Near Space Vehicle Measurement and Control and Special Measurement Technology with the Key Laboratory of Space Physics, and the Joint Innovation Laboratory of Space Measurement, Control and Communication Technology with Beijing Institute of Telemetry. SAST focuses on extensive academic exchanges and cooperation with famous universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad, and invites many academicians, experts and scholars at home and abroad to give lectures in the school.
