The School of Microelectronics of Xidian University was established in 2003. It is one of the earliest institutions in China to cultivate talents and conduct scientific research in the field of microelectronics. It is one of the first batch of 9 National Demonstration Schools of Microelectronics and one of the first batch of 9 Integrated Circuit Talent Cultivation Bases.
Formerly known as the Institute of Microelectronics, the School of Microelectronics began to enroll undergraduates in 1959. In 1970, it independently completed an integrated circuit production line. In 1986 and 1996, it respectively had the right to confer master's and doctoral degrees. In May 2015, it was approved as one of the first batch of National Demonstration Schools of Microelectronics. It currently has two first-level disciplines: "Electronic Science and Technology" and "Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering". And it has made great achievements in talent training and scientific research innovation in the fields of compound semiconductor materials and device research and development, analog and mixed signal integrated circuit design, and integrated circuit computer-aided design.
The school has a total of 170 teachers, of whom 58 are professors and 72 are associate professors. There are more than 30 high-level talents such as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and foreign academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has an innovative group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, a “national university teacher team in Huang Danian’s mode”, national teaching and education models, and national model teachers.
The school has built the only national engineering research center in the field of the third-generation semiconductor, and the only national integrated circuit innovation platform with integration of industry and education in Northwest China. The school has built the key laboratory in Shaanxi, the engineering technology research center in Shaanxi, and the 2011 collaborative innovation center in Shaanxi. The school has innovated the "trinity" compound talents training mode in the field of integrated circuits and won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award (2018). With strong support, electronic science and technology was rated "A+" in the fourth round of discipline assessment.
The school currently has doctoral and master’s degree authorization units in the first level disciplines of "Electronic Science and Technology" and "Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering", doctoral and master’s degree authorization units in the discipline of "Electronic Information" and two undergraduate majors. The first level discipline of "Electronic Science and Technology" has a center for post-doctoral studies. The two undergraduate majors "Microelectronics Science and Engineering" and "Integrated Circuit Design and Integrated System" are listed among the first batch of national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, both being the national quality engineering construction specialties and Shaanxi famous brand majors.
The school teaches students in accordance with their aptitude, and sets up teaching reform classes and excellence classes to cultivate top-notch innovative talents. On average, about 500 undergraduates and 700 postgraduates are admitted each year. It is one of the largest institutions to cultivate talents in the field of integrated circuits in China. At the same time, it is also one of the national institutions of higher education that have the highest level of talent cultivation in the field of integrated circuits.
Academic research of the school focuses mainly on the wide-band gap semiconductor materials and devices, VLSI/SoC design methods, the physics and reliability of nano-electronic devices, as well as novel semiconductor devices and technologies.
The school has successively cultivated more than 10,000 outstanding graduates who are making contributions in different parts of the nation. The one-time employment rate for undergraduates and graduates ranks among the top in the microelectronics industry in China. The employment rate for graduates with a bachelor’s degree exceeds 96%, and the employment rate for graduates with a a master’s degree and a doctoral degree is as high as 100%. More than 80% of the graduates are engaged in the leading companies and organizations in the industry, and more than 30% of the graduates choose to make a devotion in the western regions.
