The School of Foreign Languages originates from the Department of Foreign Languages, which was founded in 1985 and incorporated into the School of Humanities and Arts in 1999. It was formally established in 2013. Presently the school has 141 teachers, among whom there are 5 professors, 1 university-level academic leader, and 24 postgraduate supervisors. The school has three undergraduate programs offering Bachelor of Arts degrees in English,Japanese and Translation; it has programs conferring Master of Arts degrees in Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics and English Language &Literature as well as a master program conferring the degree of Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI).

The English Department and the Japanese Department, in the context of advantageous electronics and information technology of Xidian University, have cultivated nearly 1000 high-quality and multi-skilled foreign language talents who are able to meet the needs of social development. The Translation Department was founded in 2015 and will recruit the first group of students in September 2015.The postgraduate program of Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics is committed to English for Science & Technology, English Teaching, TranslationTheory & Practice and Applied Linguistics. The postgraduate program of English Language & Literature specializes in British and American Novels,Poetry, Dramas, Female Literature, and so on. Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) aims to cultivate high-level, multi-skilled professional translators and interpreters who can meet the needs of China’s economic,cultural and social developments. Meanwhile, the school undertakes teaching tasks of first and second foreign language for all undergraduates and postgraduates,involving 5 foreign languages of English, Japanese, German, French and Russian.
The leaders of the school attach great importance to disciplinary development and remarkable achievements have been scored in Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies, English for Science & Technology, Lexicography and many otheraspects. In recent years, the research projects have resulted in the publication of over 80 papers in CSSCI source journals and other core journals,and dozens of works such as monographs, translations, dictionaries and textbooks, and teaching materials recognized by the Ministry of Education and Shaanxi Province. The school has conducted numerous research projects funded either by the National Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Sciences or Shaanxi Province.
In February 2011, Xidian University was authorized by the Ministry of Education as a demonstration pilot of National College English Teaching Reform (CET Reform).As one of the pioneers to carry out CET Reform, Xidian University has been implementing the reform since 2007. Meanwhile, the school has adhered to the“student-oriented and teacher-led” teaching idea and has played a demonstrative role in implementing the new CET models based on computers and classes,establishing college English curriculum system, enhancing the connotative construction and building professional staff teams.
The school is recognized as a Foreign Language Competition Base for college students. Besides, it is a unit of the Organizing Committee of Shaanxi CollegeStudents’ English Contests, organizing various English competitions andactivities in the province year in year out. Under the guidance of teachers inthe competition base, the students play an active role in all kinds of domestic competitions such as English Speech Contest, English Debating Competition, and National English Contest for College Students (NECCS). Many of them have wonnational and provincial awards and gained honors for the University.
Withan international outlook and open mind, the school has established extensive exchanges and cooperation with universities home and abroad, including Shanghai International Studies University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Missouri Western State University in the United States, Kanazawa University, Kanda University of International Studies, Doshisha University, Waseda University in Japan etc. Each year, teachers and students are exchanged for lectures, further studies, short-term visits, overseas practices. The school also invites many famous scholars to give lectures and has employed Rebecca Oxford, a Professor from University of Maryland in the United States and former chairman of Global Foreign Language Teachers Association, as the vice President of the school’s Academic Committee. Furthermore, the school maintains good cooperative relations with many domestic institutions in terms of teachers’ development and teaching materials development. The school has established Comprehensive English Application Ability and Innovation Training Experimental Zone for Engineering Students in Shaanxi and cooperated with Huawei Xi'an Translation Center in building MTI Practice Base to provide the MTI students with practical training opportunities.
