Telecommunication

Xidian University is recognized as one of China’s founding centres of telecommunication engineering and information theory disciplines. With a focus on modern electronic information, communication theory, and cutting-edge technologies, it hosts the “State Key Laboratory of Integrated Services Networks”. Xidian University developed China's first meteor burst communication system in China, first millimeter-wave communication equipment, first ATM switch, and the first space-grade high-speed image compression chip. XDU also established China's first international standard for foundational common technology of information security and has conducted pioneering research and exploration in cryptography.

Antenna and Electromechanical Coupling

As the "eyes" and "ears" of communication equipment, antennas are indispensable to virtually all devices, from the vast BeiDou Satellite Navigation System down to the humble smartphone. Xidian University was one of the first in China to establish programs in microwaves and antennas. As early as 1953, Academician Bi Dexian at XDU translated China's first authoritative work on antennas. In 1992, Xidian University established one of China's first State Defense Key Laboratories dedicated to antenna and microwave technology research. Over the years, XDU’s antenna research has developed distinct features and advantages, yielding significant achievements such as China's first antenna near-field measurement system; the multi-coupler system for China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning; and a super electromagnetic simulation computing system. The diverse types of antennas developed have been applied across various sectors of the national economy and defense construction, making important contributions to the development of China's communications industry.

Electronic equipment finds extensive application in fields such as communication, detection, navigation, and countermeasures. Electromechanical engineering focuses on the design, manufacturing, and protection theories and technologies of this equipment, where mechanical structures ensure electrical performance. Over the past decade, XDU has systematically established field coupling models for electromagnetic, displacement, and thermal fields in electronic equipment. It revealed the impact mechanism of nonlinear structural factors on electrical performance, and proposed a multi-domain coupling theory integrating structure, control, and information. It has pioneered breakthroughs in CAD/CAE digital modeling and heterogeneous collaboration technologies, independently developing China's first comprehensive high-performance electromechanical design platform for electronic equipment. This platform synthesizes electromagnetic, structural, thermal, control, and information technologies, enabling China to leapfrog in high-performance electronic equipment and enhanced industry innovation capabilities

Microelectronics

For decades, Xidian University has remained focused on global frontiers in technology and major national demands in semiconductors and integrated circuits. It has established a high-end scientific and technological innovation platform system centered around the "State Key Laboratory - National Engineering Research Center - National Integrated Circuit Industry-Education Integration Innovation Platform," covering the entire chain from basic research to technological breakthroughs and achievement transformation. It has developed internationally leading foundational theories and core technologies for third-generation semiconductor equipment, materials, devices, and circuits. These achievements have been widely applied in projects such as BeiDou and 5G communication, helping to advance China's third-generation semiconductor technology to the global forefront. Furthermore, Xidian University has made successive breakthroughs in core field of advanced integrated circuits, including multi-level low-power chip design, high-efficiency analog-to-digital converters, and negative-capacitance transistors, serving national key projects and related industries.

Information Sensing and Radar

Xidian University has consistently aligned with national strategic needs in radar sector. It established China's first undergraduate program in radar engineering. Focusing on fundamental theories and key technologies of radar systems and signal processing, it hosts the “State Key Laboratory of Radar Signal Processing”. XDU developed China’s inaugural meteorological radar, the first programmable radar signal processor, and the first PAN-9A searchlight radar. These technological achievements have been deployed in critical radar systems across the country.
