Lecturer  Profile

Malcolm Macdonald, Leader  of University of Strathclyde. He is the Director of the Scottish Centre of  Excellence in Satellite Applications. His work focuses on the development and  application of space mission systems and space technology, challenging  conventional ideas to enable new concepts in the exploration and exploitation  of space. Funded by a diverse funding portfolio, his work is reported in over  100 publications ranging from the research councils to space agencies and  industrial collaborators.
He led the development  of The International Handbook of Space Technology, a comprehensive handbook  providing a holistic understanding of the system-of-system that is a modern  spacecraft, and is one of only two European Associate Editors of the Journal of  Guidance, Control and Dynamics, the top-ranked archival journal in Aerospace  Engineering.

Prior to joining the  University of Strathclyde in 2008, he worked at SciSys Ltd. on several projects  throughout the entire lifecycle, including ADM-Aeolus and LISA-Pathfinder. He  is also the Deputy Chair of the UK Space Agency’s Space Programme Review Panel, representing the  University of Strathclyde on the UK Space Action Network (SPAN), where he is  the alternative member of the Space Leadership Council, and a Fellow of the  Royal Aeronautical Society.

Lecture  Abstract

Malcolm’s work focuses on the development and  application of space mission systems and space technology, challenging  conventional ideas to enable new concepts in the exploration and exploitation  of space. This topic gives overview of CubeSat Technology, Capabilities and  Science, including some of the work they have done, and builds on the recent  National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report that he was on  the committee for.
