School of Life Science and Technology

The School of Life Science and Technology (SLST) at Xidian University is committed to making significant improvements in current and future life science technologies through well-funded research and development. SLST was founded in 2009, merging two former research entities, i.e. the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Research Center of Intelligent Biological Information attached to the School of Electronics Engineering with most of their pioneering staff. The former has its long history back to 1990, with particular strength in bio-signal processing. The latter was founded in 2006, with special focus on cutting-edge life science technologies, such as neuroimaging and molecular imaging. Therefore, SLST has heritage from both.

Currently,SLST consists of two departments, i.e. the Department of Biomedical Engineeringand the Department of Biotechnology, with 36 faculties, among whom are 7 professors, 20 associate professors and 9 lecturers. SLST has its reputation throughout the province and the nation, and has received support of several prestigious programs implemented by the Ministry of Education, National Natural Science Foundation, etc. Moreover, SLST has ample resources of funding from both governments and companies.

Research

SLST is a research-oriented school. Our research fields span in three major directions. The detailed information is provided as follows:

1.Molecular Imaging

The term molecular imaging can be broadly defined as the in vivo characterization and quantification of biological processes at the cellular and molecular levels via an imaging method. It has been widely used for early diagnosis, therapeutic effect supervision and dynamic pesticide effect evaluation. It has opened a new world for basic biology and clinical medicine research. Optical molecular imaging has become a hot topic in the field due to its significant advantages of imaging sensitivity and specificity, temporal resolution, and cost-effectiveness. The Molecular Imaging Group (MIG) is composed of members from engineering, biology and mathematics. MIG possesses the molecular imaging and the biotechnology laboratories, which have a sophisticated software platform, imaging system and conditions for biological experiments. The dominant research concern of MIG is to address the fundamental and applied issues in multimodality molecular imaging, including imaging theory and algorithms,the development of imaging system and software platform, and the application of molecular imaging techniques in cancer research and drug development.

2.Functional Imaging and Computational Neuroscience

The functional Imaging and Computational Neuroscience Group (FICN) has continuously dedicated to cognitive neuroscience, biological signal analysis and related research. Its current research interests cover neural mechanisms of acupuncture and internet addiction using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and biological signal monitor devices. Chinese acupuncture comprises a major part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its efficiency has been widely accepted in oriental and western societies. However, the neural mechanism of acupuncture is incompatible with modern scientific basis. Our group has made constant efforts in this area and has a number of publications in the past five years. On the other hand, internet addiction has become a major social issue. It has exerted negative influences over teenagers’ psychological and physical conditions. The studies on this issue are still in their early stages. Our team is one of the pioneers initiating related studies using behavioral and neuro imaging approaches.

3.Biometric Recognition and Encryption

Biometrics has the advantages of universality, uniqueness and stability. Based on the sephysiological or behavioral characteristics, we mainly focus on the following two research fields: 1) individual identification and authentication; and 2)biometric-based data encryption algorithms and remote authentication methods combining a cryptograph. Biometric-based recognition and encryption techniques can prevent some common security problems. The Biometric Recognition and Encryption (BRE) group members come from the areas of pattern recognition and cryptography, and have published more than 30 papers and obtained 10 authorized patents. The team independently developed an automatic fingerprint identification algorithm that ranked No. 3 in the world and No. 1 in China, in the Third International Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC 2004).
